How to Properly Store Mexican Food to Keep it Fresh
Mar 20, 2023

Mexican food is a favorite for many people. How often have you gone to a restaurant for Mexican food without finishing the plate? Like virtually any other restaurant leftovers, you can store Mexican food safely for another day. Here's how you store leftovers from your favorite Mexican restaurant to enjoy at home.

Safe Storage Is Necessary

Safe storage is important for every type of food. Safe storage is essential for preserving food quality and safety. Food must be preserved at specific temperatures to ensure that it does not promote bacteria growth.

According to the U.S. Environmental Health Division, in a Mexican restaurant and every other restaurant, the refrigerator has to be maintained at 41 degrees Fahrenheit. You should make sure your home refrigerator is kept at the proper temperature, too.

You Need the Proper Container

To store your restaurant leftovers, having the right type of container is important. You'll need a container with a lid that seals well. Of course, you can use plastic wrap to cover the container instead of a lid.

Acidic foods should not be wrapped with tin foil. Mexican food often contains highly acidic ingredients like tomatoes and lime juice. Instead of using foil, cover the container you store your leftovers in tightly with plastic wrap if you don't have a lid.

Tortillas Need Special Treatment

If your leftovers include tortillas, you can also store them in the refrigerator. Keep in mind that your restaurant leftovers have a shelf life in the refrigerator of about three to five days, according to Mayo Clinic. You can store the tortillas in a sealed plastic bag. To reheat the tortillas, Kitchn recommends that you microwave them for 20 seconds at a time or use an oven set to 350 degrees for 15 minutes. By storing and reheating your tortillas properly, you'll find that they taste almost as good as they did fresh at your favorite Mexican restaurant.

Some of the best Mexican restaurants serve large portions of everyone's favorite dishes. Thankfully, you can safely enjoy your
Mexican food over a couple of days. Just be conscious of how long you have had the food and how well it's been stored. If you're looking for a new Mexican restaurant to enjoy, visit us at Blind Owl Restaurant and Bar. You may just find your new favorite Mexican dishes!
